A tin cup, some Camels, and a voodoo charm
That I stole
She was humming this murder ballad
As we hit the road
Of the things we left behind
That terrified
It was only the worthless art
I tried to hide
She was an angel, unstable
A black bullet's dream
This murderous ballerina
Held in such high esteem
To a standing ovation we found
Our prospects dimmed
When the ticket man said two tickets
She pumped four bullets in him
We hit the Red River running and stopped
To purchase some shade
When the River Queen picked up her shovel
I knew we'd been made
I was sweatin', frettin', while she smiled
And fired up her bone
When blue lighting flashed I knew
I would never go home
The riverboat swain took me aside
Said here is your chance
I'm familiar with her story, I'm familiar
With your circumstance
Loneliness is a beautiful struggle
Wouldn't you agree?
Inspiring worthless art
Before you, it was me
"See those Alabama Blasters
Had let her bleed
For shaking her moneymaker
Round their family tree
When there was nothing left to say
They sealed up her mouth
Alabama went sideways
And I headed south"
"I found the femme fatale who fucked the French hotel
Had stole my cigarettes
But the sweetheart deal in my front pocket feels
Like we aren't finished yet
So now you come here on the breeze, with this villainous sleaze
It's time to call my priest!"
In the morning I found the riverboat captain
Deceased
At high noon they met in the dust
On the Estacado
Two worn out, tore up, guilt driven
Desperados
The voodoo charm went silent
I heard her laugh
You found your own way here
Now find your way back
You had so many ways to leave
When you came in
By the light of the blood red moon
You took the Coward's Road again
Of all the madness I've created it was you
That swallowed me whole
All the worthless art we tolerated
Has levied its toll
I filled the tin cup with ashes that I knew
Would never quench her thirst
I paced off the space off where she lay
Though she drew first
Broken eyes, the blue reckoning'
Stays so softly
You can forgive me, forsake me, but you know
You'll always love me
Do you understand the reasons
Why you came
If you remembered her the way I do
I doubt you'd feel the same
You gaze across an alabaster sky
She found a good thing she did
And let a good thing die
